“You can recover from a hernia”

Do not slouch and stand firmly on two legs. Hans van Loenen (67) knows what he needs to do to get rid of his hernia, but without a re-mind he quickly falls into old mistakes.

Hans is active, he walks and plays golf a lot. “Yet you spend a large part of your life sitting,” he realizes. Due to a wrong posture - slumping too much - he has gradually developed a hernia in recent years. It also has a tendency to sag when standing. “I notice it on the golf course or in the supermarket, I lean on one leg instead of two. That's not good for your back.”

Hans can recover from the hernia within a year, but he will have to improve his posture. The neurologist therefore referred him to exercise therapist Johanneke Dekker. “Among other things, she pointed out the re-mind to me. I thought: let me give it a try. After almost three months I can say: it works.”

Hans knows that he can learn new behavior. When he previously had problems with his back, he learned to get in and out of bed properly and to bend deeply to his knees when he picked up or lifted something. “I now do that well without thinking.” The trick to getting rid of his hernia is to sit and stand upright all day long. Johanneke's exercises and the re-mind help him with this. He sometimes puts the re-mind on the table, but usually just puts it in his pocket. “The vibration always brings me back to the lesson. Until this too becomes automatic.”
