I can let go of my clients more quickly”

As an exercise therapist, Johanneke Dekker teaches people to become masters of their own bodies. “I provide them with new behavior that they have to automate themselves.” Many clients use the re-mind, such as Frans Bokdam (69) from Leusden.

Frans has, as he says himself, a 'severely worn lower back'. Wrong posture, heredity and sitting a lot when he was still working are the main causes of this. “I like to read the newspaper or a book at the table and I always slump.” He has suffered from the pain for a long time, but since he has been receiving treatment from Johanneke, he has been doing a lot better. “She gives me tips and exercises and teaches me what I need to change structurally.”

Awareness

The wear and tear on his back cannot be reversed, Johanneke adds. “But with good exercise he can keep his complaints limited. For Frans it was really about awareness: what am I actually doing? When he reads or studies, he becomes very absorbed in it and forgets the world around him. So he sits in the same position for hours. That in itself is bad, and of course even more so if your attitude is wrong. So he has to break that. And that's where the re-mind comes in handy.”

Sit up, French!

Frans usually places the re-mind on the table in front of him. “Every few minutes I get a signal: sit up, Frans! Then I move and pull the table towards me again.” He also uses the re-mind when watching television, when visiting and in the car. “And later, after corona, I will definitely put it in my pocket when I go to the theater or my Hovo lectures. All in all, I am reminded of my attitude for a large part of the day.” After a month, Frans already notices a clear effect. “The pain goes away and I wake up less tired in the morning.”

Johanneke likes to use the re-mind at the end of her treatments. “In the beginning I let people practice very intensively, later I take on more of a coaching role and after about eight weeks they should be able to do it themselves. With the re-mind I can let go of them more quickly.”

Frans has also paid attention to his posture more often, but he cannot do that without any aid at all for the time being. “I think I will always continue to use the re-mind, otherwise my bad attitude will wear off again.”
