“Devices in my practice are in almost continuous use”

Speech therapist and respiratory therapist Yolande Kylstra teaches re-mind to almost all her patients, first to make them aware of their attitude or behavior and then to help a new habit or (breathing) technique take root.

“I treat two groups of patients: people with breathing and voice complaints and children or teenagers with abnormal oral habits. The first group consists of adults, the second consists largely of 10 to 17 year olds. They can all do something with the re-mind, so I'm glad I discovered this tool. The devices in my practice are in use almost continuously.

Mouth open or closed?
When people come to me for the first time, I give them the re-mind to take home. Only use it for a week, I say, purely for observation. Every time they feel him shaking, they have to look at themselves. Do I have my mouth open or closed? Where is the tip of my tongue? Where do I feel my breath? Am I sitting upright or slumped? Did I tighten my abs? They don't have to do anything with it yet. Just observe: what is my attitude or behavior? After a week I see the patient back in my practice. He or she is then aware of the 'problem'.

I take the re-mind again and first teach them the technique for a new habit that they have to learn. It sometimes takes a while for them to master it sufficiently. When I think they can start practicing at home, we phase out the treatments and I give them the re-mind to take home. Then I usually ask them to order one themselves or buy it.

Subtle and loving signal
With the re-mind, people can check themselves – and correct themselves if necessary. They receive a subtle and loving signal many times a day to think about it. It takes about 40 days for a new habit to really become established. Are people using their re-mind all this time? No, I do not think so. After a while, I think you get used to the stimulus and you no longer register it. I advise my patients to use the device very intensively for a few weeks to get a good start in learning the new habit. If you notice that you are getting used to it, put it away for a while and use it again after a week.

Phone off in class
Most of my patients put the re-mind in their pocket or on a string around their neck. Adolescents don't want a wristband, it's too noticeable. And whether an app on your phone works just as well? No, I investigated that together with one of my patients, a young boy. They must turn off their phones in class. And you hear a signal like that, they find it annoying. They only feel the vibration of the re-mind.”
